Today Rockhurst Head football coach Tony Severino announced he will retire at the end of this season.
The coaching legend has led Rockhurst for the last 37 years. The Hawklets have been one of the most dominant programs in the Metro and Midwest during that time.
In his four decades as a head coach, Severino’s teams have won at the highest level year in and year out. He has a career record of 370-106-1in 41 years with a record of 326-85-1 at Rockhurst.
Severino said that 50 years was a good time to retire.
“My wife and I talked and there are some things in my life that are kind of on my bucket list,” Severino said. “I’ll be 71 in a couple of weeks and there are some things in life. I’ve got 10 beautiful grandkids and I love going to their events. It’s time not to miss out on some things and spend some more time with my wife because honestly you never know.”
He began his coaching career in his hometown of Cleveland, Ohio before coming to Shawnee Mission West where he was an assistant football coach and head baseball coach. His first state title was a baseball title at West before he became the head coach at Shawnee Mission Northwest where he led the Cougars to their only state title in 1982.
He moved to Rockhurst in 1983 where his teams have won seven state championships and finished second five more times. He currently resides in Overland Park.
