For nearly the entire first half between Kearney and Grandview, it was a matchup that lived up to the billing of the No. 4 and No. 5 ranked teams in Class 4.

Then, in one play and even more specifically one broken tackle by Kearney running back Cameron Emmons, the momentum and the eventual result of the game were decided.

Emmons took a screen pass, broke a tackle at the line of scrimmage, and raced 84 yards to the end zone, scoring his first of three touchdowns.

Final Score: Kearney 42, Grandview 7.

“It was a huge momentum play,” said Kearney head coach Logan Minnick. “Our first two scores were both off of screen plays. We know they are super aggressive and like to play man-to-man. The kids executed those perfectly. Any time you can get the ball to Cameron Emmons in space, he’s pretty electric.”

Minnick also complimented the downfield blocking of his offensive line on the play that gave Kearney a 13-7 halftime lead.

For the majority of the first quarter, it looked as though Grandview had found the secret to the night: control possession and the line of scrimmage.

Grandview, with a record of 3-5, took the opening possession and drove to the Kearney 1 before penalties stymied that drive, eventually giving Kearney, with a record of 6-2, the ball on the 11. The opening drive chewed up seven minutes and 50 seconds of game clock.

A play later, however, the Grandview defense forced a turnover and would capitalize on the opportunity when Mikelis Johnson scored the Bulldogs' only touchdown.

“I'm proud of our d-line,” Minnick said. “They are really senior-heavy and have been carrying us all year. Our defense has played well. I feel bad for them because our offense turned the ball over after they made a heck of a goal-line stand, and then we turned it over on the next play.”

Between the strong play by the Kearney defensive line and Grandview penalties, the run-heavy Grandview offense found itself in tough spots for much of the night.

Kearney wasted no time in the second half when Casey Rooney connected with Manny Linthacum on a 44-yard pass that would set up Emmons' eventual 15-yard touchdown run. Linthacum would later score in the third quarter on a reverse.
