Friday’s rematch of a game that happened just two weeks ago in which Shawnee Mission Northwest came away with a 19-14 victory over Shawnee Mission East was much of the same, only tonight the SMNW Cougars beat the SME Lancers 17-14.

The Cougars defense would start the game forcing the Lancers to punt and after big runs from Senior Gabe Hoskins, SMNW was on the 7-yard line looking to score. A high snap cost the Cougars some yards and they were forced to settle for a field goal try. Senior Kicker Olivia Anderson stepped up and drilled the 32-yard field goal giving the Cougars a 3-0 lead.

Both teams traded punts back and forth, but SME would put a drive together with big runs from their backfield of Jack Reeves, Nate Phillips and Luke Pearcy. Reeves would punch it in from 3 yards out giving the Lancers a 7-3 lead going into halftime.

Shawnee Mission Northwest came out of the halftime break and kicked it up a gear, a big drive with long runs from Hoskins and Junior Joshua Mackiewicz put the Cougars on the 20-yard line. Hoskins would take a pitch, get a block from QB Logan Morley and walk into the endzone, making the score 10-7 SMNW with 7:08 left in the 3rd.

Shawnee Mission East was starting to gain some momentum, after moving the chains for a couple first downs the Lancers were facing a 3rd and 10. The Cougar defense forced Quarterback Luke Pearcy out of the pocket and he was looking for a man down field when he was sacked by Junior Linebacker Adam Hageman, forcing the Lancers to punt.

Looking to milk some clock and potentially put the game away in the 4th quarter the Cougars offense kept with its running attack. With 8:36 left in the game, Gabe Hoskins would break loose on a 28-yard Touchdown run, giving his team a 17-7 lead.

Shawnee Mission East all but gave up, putting together an 88-yard drive, consisting of 4th down conversions, a screen pass, and a few long runs. Luke Pearcy crossed the goal line on a QB sneak from 1 yard out and with 2:41 left in the game, the Lancers were back in it only down 3.

However, the Cougars running game took care of business and was able to run out the clock and Shawnee Mission Northwest came away with a 17-14 victory. They will now face No. 1 seed Gardner-Edgerton next week.
