Being a journalist is about being impartial. You don’t root for one team or player you cover, and you strive to give equal coverage as best you can.

That is something we work to do every day at PrepsKC. We are about to finish our ninth year in business, and I feel we have done a pretty good job.

I can tell you my impartiality is about to go out the window. When the NFL draft begins Thursday night, I will be cheering hard for one of the Metro’s own. I will be rooting for Drew Lock as he is most likely selected in the first round of the NFL Draft.

My bias for Lock is on several levels. First, he is a KC kid. I’m from here and I always like to see people from here do well. I have no connection to say Paul Rudd, but I like him as an actor, and he is from the Metro, so I root for him to do well.

Second, Lock went to my school. He is a Missouri Tiger and I feel like he did great things for the program when he was there, and his time will be remembered fondly.

Finally through the work that I do I have been able to get to know Lock and his family. In my limited interactions with Drew, his father Andy and the rest of his family they are good people.

Basically it’s easy to root for Drew Lock. He will go down as one of the highest drafted players to come out of Kansas City and who knows what will happen from there. At the least, he hopefully has a long healthy NFL career and who knows maybe he goes on to be one of the better quarterbacks in the league that we can all watch and enjoy.

Good luck Drew. Enjoy the moment. You’ve earned it.
