Quote of the night

“It was a great high school football game, that’s the way it should be on Friday night. A lot of rivalry. They’re all friends, they grew up together. They punched it out, one punch after another. We had one more punch in us.” – Lawrence coach Dirk Wedd after his team beat rival Lawrence Free State 14-12 for their first win over the firebirds since 2011.

Carter Putz, quarterback, Bishop Miege – 17 of 29 passing for 352 yards 4 TDs

The Stags signal caller had a great night in a 42-35 shootout loss to Blue Valley. His team came up short but Putz put his team in a position to win the game.

Call of the night

Blue Springs South had never won a regular season game at Rockhurst in a series that dates back to 2002. The Jaguars jumped out to an early lead but the teams traded scores through the middle part of the game. South held a 31-19 lead but Rockhurst was driving when Ricky Nichols made the defensive play of the game.

Team of the night

Lee’s Summit North – The Broncos continued their remarkable turnaround with a 13-9 win over Lee’s Summit West. It was North’s first-ever win over West and moves the Broncos to 4-1 on the season. The four wins are the same amount as the last three seasons combined.

Big Winner

High School Football Fans – On a night when storms ravaged the southern part of the Metro with dangerous winds, lightning and a tornado. There were several late starts and numerous delays but once the player hit the field it was a night like no other. When it was all over 17 of the 61 games were decided by one touchdown or less with several coming down to the wire. It seemed no matter where you were watching a game it was a good one.
