Several teams in the IL look to rebound after Week 2 struggles

Week 2 was not kind to teams in the Interscholastic League.

Kansas City Central notched their first win of the season with a 47-26 league win over East, but other than that, the IL was shut out of the win column.

Defending league champion East is 0-2 on the young season.

After a Week 1 win, Southeast was on the losing end of a 56-6 contest at perennial power Jefferson City Helias, and both Northeast and Lincoln Prep were knocked off.

Lincoln Prep head coach Henry Newell said his young team is working overtime to right the ship after a 27-18 loss at Plattsburg.

The Blue Tigers host University Academy Saturday at IL Stadium.

“With any young team, kids have short memory and they are excited to play again,” Newell said. “The Plattsburg game taught our kids the importance of being in shape. We were drained by the end of the first quarter.

“The kids came by Monday excited and they get little better every day. We will get there.”

Northeast is coming off a 51-0 thumping from the hands of Richmond. Head coach Roger Franks said the game was a great lesson for the Vikings.

“In order to be the best, you have to beat the best,” Franks said. “I wouldn't be surprised to see Richmond make a run for the title. Every young program needs to play a game against a Richmond. It allows you to measure where you are, who you are, and what can I do to get better.”

Franks added improvement starts at the top.

“I need to do a better job preparing my guys to play,” he said. “We didn't match their level of play and we had too many mistakes. In order to compete with a team that is physical, talented, and discipline, you can’t make mistakes.”

The Vikings will square off Saturday against Central, which leads the IL with a 1-0 record.

“We go into league play with a simple game plan,” Franks said. “Block. Run. Tackle.”

Southeast plays at Schlagle Friday and East hosts Hogan Prep Friday at IL Stadium.
