In one week, upstart Kansas City Central and an improving Lincoln Prep squad will meet for a chance to stake claim at an Interscholastic League championship.

Central is 3-3 overall on the season and 3-0 in league play entering its tilt against Lincoln Prep next Friday. Win, and the Blue Eagles are champions of the five-team IL.

Lincoln Prep is 3-3 on the season, and 2-0 in the IL. A win Saturday against East would put the Blue Tigers in position to claim at least a tie for the league crown.

But, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves, Central head coach Allan Supplee said. While happy to sit atop the current league standings, the Blue Eagles have an out-of-league game Friday against a winless Class 5 Columbia Hickman (0-6) team.

Supplee wants his squad to focus on the now after last week’s 36-14 win over league foe Southeast.

“We need to win outside the IL,” Supplee said. “The IL championship would mean a lot to the school, the program and these kids, but we want to go farther than that. We set goals at the beginning of the season and we are working each day to achieve them.”

Supplee said the biggest key to the win over Southeast was teamwork.

“We played well in all three phases of the game,” he said.

Lincoln Prep head coach Henry Newell said his young squad has gotten better each week after a tough 1-3 start. The Blue Tigers routed Northeast last week 48-12.

“We still have not played good football yet,” Newell said. “Our kids are more focused and working fairly hard.”

Before the showdown against Central, the Blue Tigers will face a winless East (0-6, 0-2 IL) squad on Saturday. There will be no looking past the Bears, Newell said.

“We play one game at a time,” he said. “We are not good enough to look past anyone. We expect a tough game versus East.”

Also on the IL slate this week, Northeast (1-5, 1-2) will take on Southeast (1-5, 0-2) on Saturday.
