Coach Profile: Tony Severino 2/10
By Dion Clisso PrepsKC Managing Editor
When you think of Rockhurst, you think of Tony Severino. That is saying a lot considering the fact that Rockhurst has a long tradition of winning football.
Severino came to Rockhurst in 1983 after coaching at Shawnee Mission Northwest where he had just won a Kansas 6A title. When the job came open Severino made no secret it was job he wanted.
“The tradition was always here even before I got here,” Severino said. “When I got here the school was just not quite 75-years old now it is 100. There was always a tradition. Obviously with the media now and the internet many more people are aware of Rockhurst and what we’ve done. We’ve always felt like there’s always been a good tradition here.”
In his time at Rock Severino has coached five state championship teams and countless other playoff squads that made deep runs in the playoffs. But it is the tradition of Rockhurst that keeps people coming back and Severino glad he made the decision to move to the Hawklets when the opportunity came his way.
“For me it was a natural,” Severino said. “Everybody that knew me knew and any one of my friends that knew my background in Cleveland, Ohio, that I went to an all-boys school like Rockhurst. I had three sons at the time and I knew I wanted them to go here and I knew one of the opportunities I would have to coach them was if I was here.”
In his time at Rockhurst he has seen a lot of great players and coached in a lot of great games. This past year Severino may have turned in one of his better coaching jobs. The veteran coach and his staff guided the Hawklets to a 14-0 record and a Class 6 state title which was Severino’s sixth as a head coach. This wasn’t the most dominant Rockhurst team but the Hawklets just found a way to win close games including coming from behind to win the state championship game over two-time defending champion Hazelwood Central.
