Welcome to Five From Friday our weekly feature that highlights some of the best quotes, notes, stats and performances of the games Friday night.

Quote of the night

“It’s our seniors, 100 percent. You could’ve come to our practices last year when we were 0-10 and you wouldn’t have known it because of the group of kids that we have here.” - Belton coach Todd Vaughn said in comparing last year’s 0-10 season to this year’s team after beating Raytown 22-6 to move to 5-0.

Stat line of the night

Wentric Williams III, jr. running back, Liberty – Williams was a workhorse for the Blue Jays in their 52-28 win over Columbia Rock Bridge. He finished with 249 yards and 4 touchdowns on 38 carries.

Call of the night

The Halo Network of student broadcasters from St. Thomas Aquinas bring their excitement every game. This week they were on the call when the Saints won 35-34 over Shawnee Mission Northwest in a crazy game that saw the Saints trail 28-7 at the half. The cougars scored with 38 seconds left and went for two and the win. Here is the call.

Team of the night

Winnetonka – the Griffins trailed Kearney 16-0 in the third quarter only to come back and win 20-16. Winnetonka is now 6-0 on the season. That is the first 6-0 start to a season since 1982.

Big Winner

Metro football fans – while attending games may take some work there are plenty of great games each week this season. While most of those are already on the schedule there are others that are put together a week or two before or sometimes a few days before. Last week Maryville played at Odessa and Shawnee Mission Northwest took on St. Thomas Aquinas. Neither game was on the schedule to start the season, but both were new matchups between good programs. It’s not ideal but there are some good games every week that come out of thin air.
