In a game that was not officially scheduled until 11:00, Friday morning, Basehor-Linwood held of Center 26-21. The outcome was not decided until the final play of the game.

Basehor-Linwood coach Rod Stallbaumer, spoke before the game, “I spoke to Coach (Bryan) DeLong and we exchanged film about noon. You don’t have to worry about hiding anything, they haven’t seen us, we haven’t seen them, run your stuff and execute.”

His counterpart Bryan DeLong agreed, “This happened to us a couple weeks ago when we picked up a game with Capital City, but at least we had one day to practice for them. But this is do what you do well and hopefully, it’s better than what they do well.”

Both teams stumbled out of the gates, with each school committing a turnover. Center got on the scoreboard first with a 5-yard touchdown run by Jacorey, “Juice” Love. The kick made it 7-0.

The Bobcats answered, with two quick scores. Brady Garrison split the safeties and found Chants Nelson over the middle, for a 34-yard touchdown. Gage Greer, converted the kick. The second score Garrison kept it himself and scored from 2-yards out. Greer’s kick was no good.

Center only needed one offensive play, as Love took a handoff and outran everyone for a 73-yard score. The kick put the Yellowjackets up by one.

The Bobcats took the lead when workhorse running back Zack Sisemore, powered his way in from 3 yards out. Greer converted and the Bobcats went to the locker room with a 20-14 lead.

Both squads’ defensive units controlled the second half. Each side forced the other into a turnover on downs. In the 4th quarter, Center faced a 4th and 15, from the Bobcats 38-yard line. Quarterback Joseph Vick, moved out of harms’ way, and threw a strike to Armand Russell for the first down. A few plays later, Love scored on a 7-yard Jet-Sweep, from 7 yards out. The kick put the Yellowjackets up by one with 2:21 left in the game.

The Bobcats quickly moved down the field and with :54 left in the game Garrison scored on a 9-yard quarterback draw. The two-point pass was incomplete, and Bobcats were up 26-21.

Garrison spoke of the game winner afterwards, “My teammates did their job, I can’t do anything without them. I saw the guy coming hot off the edge, and I took it back inside, and toughed it out to get in.”

The Yellowjackets made a valiant effort to steal the win. Vick moved his team down to the Bobcats 19-yard line, with :10 left in the game. Two incomplete passes later the game was over.

After the game, Stallbaumer, summed up the victory, “This game is going to help us ton, because we’re going to play teams like down the road, hopefully.”

The Bobcats go to 3-0 and will travel to Turner next week. The Yellowjackets record is now 3-1, with home game against Warrensburg next week.
