Taking a look back at Week 3

Welcome to Five From Friday our weekly feature that highlights some of the best quotes, notes, stats and performances of the games Friday night.

Quote of the night
“It was really just a free for all. We didn’t get any calls in from the sideline. We sent some guys into the gaps so we wouldn’t have to worry about a run, and I just watched the quarterback roll out. He lobbed it, but I think that was a pretty crazy catch. That was a wonderful way to end the game.” Oak Park senior linebacker Karl Knaak talking about his interception with 40 seconds left that sealed the Northmen’s 14-10 win over Grain Valley.

Stat line of the night
Cash Parker, quarterback, Blue Springs South – The senior threw for 437 yards and five touchdowns leading the Jaguars back from an 18-point fourth quarter deficit to beat Park Hill 50-49.

Call of the night
Smithville hadn’t lost a game since the Class 4 semifinals in the 2020 season. Kearney would have been victim 16 in a row if the Warriors field goal went through the uprights. It fell short and the Bulldogs hung on to a 20-19 win to move to 3-0 on the season. Sports Radio 810’s Tim Spoerl was on the call.

Winning field goal falls short.

Team of the night
Shawnee Mission North – The Bison opened the season with a 28-7 win over Shawnee Mission South and welcomed Olathe South on Friday for homecoming and a celebration of the 100th anniversary of the school. North didn’t send the home fans home sad beating the Falcons 28-21 to move to 2-0 and match its win total from the four seasons combined.

Big Winner
Leavenworth – The Pioneers rolled to their second straight win 61-14 to open its season 2-0. Leavenworth also scored 61 points in the first game as it shutout Turner. The Pioneers offense is on fire and looks much improved from the squad that score more than 30 points three times last season.
