Heated rivals

This week's DiPasquale Moore/PrepsKC Metro Game of the Week should be an interesting affair.

Wyandotte is coming off its first win of the season. The Bulldogs, 1-4 overall and 1-3 in Meadowlark League play, started the season on a four-game losing streak. After two blow-out losses to start the season, Wyandotte has been competitive in recent weeks.

Behind a power running game, an opportunistic defense and big time plays on special teams, the Bulldogs handled Harmon 40-14 in Week 5.

"Our kids have grown a lot since the beginning of the season," head coach Marcus Vaughn said. "I hope we can carry that over to the Washington game."

Washington is 3-2 on the season and 2-1 in the Meadowlark League. After winning their first three games off the season, the Wildcats will try to stop a two-game losing streak when they host Wyandotte.

Wamego and Atchison outscored Washington 116-24 in those games.

Still, Vaughn said, Wyandotte is preparing for a hard-fought league game against the Wildcats.

"Washington is a tough physical team that we know we have to match," Vaughn said. The keys to victory?

"Don't beat ourselves and turnovers," Vaughn said.

Washington head coach Camron Smith is 2-1 against Wyandotte since the 2019 season. Last year, the Wildcats beat Harmon on the road 22-0.
