The Lafayette County Huskers advanced to the Missouri Class 2 quarterfinals with a 50-31 victory over St. Michael in Higginsville on Friday night.

The Huskers, 12-0, got off to a quick start when Aaron Vasquez scored on the opening drive for Lafayette County.

On the ensuing possession the defense would step up for the Huskers forcing the Guardians to fumble deep in Lafayette County territory. They’d take a 12-0 lead when Shakor George scored a rushing touchdown.

St. Michael would answer back and find the end zone on a touchdown pass from Cam Zaun to Lucas Estes. The score, which made the game 12-7, was set up by a 59-yard completion from Zaun to Henry Miller.

The Guardians would score again quickly in the first quarter on a 30-yard field goal from Jackson Steiner to make it 12-10. The high scoring first quarter would come to an end when Vasquez would get his second touchdown of the quarter on a 72-yard run.

The two teams would trade touchdowns again with Lafayette County taking a 29-17 halftime lead.

On the opening possession of the second half, the Guardians would pull to 29-24, but the Huskers would let them get no closer.

Lafayette County will go on the road to face Lamar in the quarterfinals next week. The Tigers, 11-1, defeated Adrian 35-18 in their district final.
